The phrase “multi-modal management” is not a new concept in the treatment of canine OA. In fact, it was popularized in the early 2000s when veterinarians began to recognize there are options beyond “Rest and Rimadyl.”
To be clear, Rimadyl and other NSAIDs remain a very important part of OA management. But nutritional recommendations, particularly diets high in Omega 3 fatty acids, rehabilitation techniques, lifestyle modifications and adjunctive medications are also important for patients with OA. Dogs with OA need a Comprehensive Care Plan that is customized for the individual patient and caregiver.
Today, there are so many products labeled to manage OA in dogs that it can be overwhelming for veterinary professionals and dog owners to know where to start and what really works. CARE was created to help those caring for dogs with OA sift through all of the treatment options and understand which products have research to support their use. We also provide practical advice and draw on decades of clinical experience successfully treating dogs with OA to guide veterinarians in designing their own Comprehensive Care Plans.
CARE recognizes the importance of multi-modal management of OA for several reasons:
- OA is a complex disease and there are many therapeutic targets.
- The minimum effective dose of drugs should be used; combining treatments with different mechanisms of action may help accomplish this goal.
- Every dog is different and will require an individualized combination of therapies.
- Every client is unique and a customized plan must be developed to meet their individual personal/ financial situation.
The Comprehensive Care Quad
In order to be organized yet thorough, we have divided OA management into 4 broad categories. Within each of these quadrants are subcategories that include specific treatment strategies. Comprehensive management of canine OA, at any stage, will likely include at least 1 therapy from each section.
