Legg-Calve Perthes (Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head)
The most common and successful treatment for LCP is a Femoral Head and neck Ostectomy (FHO). Total hip replacement could also be considered.
FHO typically results in an excellent prognosis, with reports of relieving pain and lameness in 80-100% of dogs. Rehabilitation is strongly recommended following FHO. Conservative/ non-surgical management is not recommended unless surgery is not feasible due to financial or medical limitations.
With successful FHO, hip OA is not expected to result in clinical symptoms. However, the foundational principles of OA management, including maintenance of a lean body condition and regular, controlled exercises, should be recommended.
